The guide
Mumbai eats faster than anywhere else in India because the city runs on commuting. That produced a street food culture engineered for one hand and a short break: vada pav sold outside stations, bhel puri on the beach at sunset, dabbawalas moving 200,000 home-cooked lunches across the city every day with a delivery record people write papers about. Underneath it are Maharashtrian home cooking, Gujarati thalis, Parsi cafés from a community that arrived from Persia over a thousand years ago, and Muslim grills around Mohammed Ali Road that come alive during Ramadan. Very little of it is expensive.
Where to focus
Four neighbourhoods to anchor a few days of eating
Colaba & Fort
The colonial core in the south. Irani cafés with marble tables and bentwood chairs, some serving the same menu since the 1920s.
Mohammed Ali Road
The Muslim quarter, and the best grilled meat in the city. Extraordinary during Ramadan, when the street becomes a night market until dawn.
Dadar
Central, Maharashtrian, and largely local. Vada pav stalls, misal counters, and the flower market in the early morning.
Bandra
North across the sea link. Catholic East Indian food, Goan places, and the newer restaurants where the money has moved.
What to eat
The dishes the city is known for
- 01
Vada pav
· Spiced potato fritter in a soft roll with chutney and fried chilli. Ten rupees, sold outside every station, and the city's defining snack. - 02
Pav bhaji
· Mashed spiced vegetables cooked down on a griddle with a lot of butter, served with toasted rolls. Invented here for mill workers. - 03
Bhel puri
· Puffed rice, sev, onion, tamarind, and coriander, mixed to order. Eaten on Chowpatty and Juhu beaches in the evening. - 04
Bombay duck
· Not duck. A soft lizardfish, dried or fried in semolina. A Koli fishing community staple, still on menus in the south. - 05
Berry pulao
· Parsi rice with barberries imported from Iran, most famously at Britannia in Fort. Sweet, sour, and unlike anything else in the city. - 06
Cutting chai
· Half a glass of strong milky tea with ginger or cardamom. The unit of measurement for a work break.
Practical notes
Meal timing, tipping, payment
Street stalls run from morning until late, with a peak around office hours and again after 19:00. Irani cafés close in the afternoon between services. Cash for anything on the street, though UPI payment is now near universal for locals. The monsoon from June to September genuinely disrupts movement. Tipping is around 10 percent in restaurants, nothing at stalls. Tap water is not drunk.
