The guide
Porto is the rougher, older sibling of Lisbon. Where Lisbon is sun-bleached and pastel, Porto is stone and tile and the smell of grilled sardines drifting up from the Douro. The food is heavier, the wine list is half port and half Vinho Verde, and the city's signature dish is a four-meat sandwich drenched in beer-and-spiced-tomato sauce that you eat with a fork. Porto invented port wine, exported it to Britain, and built the city's economy on the trade. The lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia still ship the major brands worldwide. On the Porto side, the eating happens around the Mercado do Bolhão (reopened 2022 after a long renovation) and in the working-class neighbourhoods uphill from the river. The seafood is some of the best in Iberia.
Where to focus
Four neighbourhoods to anchor a few days of eating
Ribeira
The riverfront UNESCO quarter. Touristy by definition, but the cellars across the water in Gaia are part of the same trip. Eat the grilled sardines at a riverside terrace at dusk, port wine after.
Bolhão & Santa Catarina
The market neighbourhood. The Mercado do Bolhão (Art Nouveau, reopened 2022) is the food anchor; Rua Santa Catarina has the Majestic Café (since 1921) two blocks south. Modern brunch spots fill in between.
Foz do Douro
Where the river meets the Atlantic. Seafood restaurants on the rocks, surf beaches, the sunset crowd. Trams 1 and 18 from the centre. Plan to spend half a day here.
Cedofeita & Bonfim
The arts neighbourhoods. Galleries, modern Portuguese small-plate restaurants, natural-wine bars, the new generation of Porto chefs. Quiet on Sundays.
What to eat
The dishes the city is known for
- 01
Francesinha
· The Porto sandwich. Steak, sausage, ham, and cured-meat layers covered in melted cheese and drowned in a beer-and-tomato sauce. Some places top it with a fried egg. Eaten with chips, with a beer, slowly. Lunchtime food. - 02
Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá
· Salt cod baked with potatoes, onions, eggs, and olives. One of the hundreds of bacalhau preparations the country has; this one is specifically Porto. - 03
Tripas à moda do Porto
· Tripe stewed with white beans, sausage, and vegetables. The city's nickname is tripeiros (tripe-eaters) because of it. Lunch food, served Mondays at the old casas de pasto. - 04
Sardinhas assadas
· Grilled sardines on bread, June through September. Same as Lisbon but the riverfront grills here feel less polished and more local. - 05
Pastel de nata
· Custard tart. Lisbon may have Pastéis de Belém, but Porto has Manteigaria's flagship at Rua dos Clérigos and a dozen smaller bakeries that turn them out warm all day. - 06
Port wine
· The fortified wine the city is named for. Tawny ports for after dinner, white ports with tonic as an aperitif. Cross the bridge to Gaia for the cellar tastings; the Porto side has the bars.
Practical notes
Meal timing, tipping, payment
Lunch 12:30 to 15:00, dinner 19:30 to 22:30. Tipping 5–10% sit-down, rounding up at counters. The couvert (bread, olives, butter put on the table without asking) costs €2–4 and isn't free; refuse if you don't want it. Cards work everywhere. Sundays many family places close; plan around Saturday lunch instead.
